Review of Still Cookin' By Caroline KeysSep 06 2006With their third release, "Still Cookin,'" Montana's own LeftOver Biscuits branch out from the confines of the bluegrass genre and lay down a playful set of songs that we all know and love, but have never heard quite like this. For instance, in the hands of Leftover Biscuits, the song "Flowers on the Wall," written by Lewis Dewitt (you know, the one with the chorus that goes "smokin' cigarettes and watching Captain KANG Kangaroo / now don't tell me I've nuthin' to do"), takes on a much more sincere timbre than the original familiar and goofy recording. Each instrumentalist comes across strong, and no one band member out-shines another. The CD features enthusiastic harmony singing by Jim Sticka (guitar), Rudy Urban(banjo), Chad Fadely (mandolin), and Andrea Urban. The band's cover of John Lowell's "Fergus County Jail" alone is worth the $15 that the CD costs. These folks will make you wonder if vocal delivery this honest and authentic is heard outside our glorious state of Montana-and will certainly leave you with a smile on your face.

Becky and Mark Uranga Jul 27 2005Dear Jim and LeftOver Biscuits, Thanks so much for being involved in our wedding. Music has always been a very important part of our families' lives, whether it be for Mass, sitting around the campfire, to celebrate or to mourn. So I knew that I needed a special band for our wedding. Thank for bringing so much energy and joy to the reception. Everyone loved you and I am certain that they were humming the songs for the rest of the week. All I heard the next day was "I love the fiddle and banjo song..." Mark and I realized how blessed we are to have the support we have, it certainly makes it easier to go out and help others when we both know that all those people you guys had dancing are praying for us. All our best to you and your families, Becky
Miles City Bluegrass FestivalSep 16 2004Hey Guys, Thanks again for all you did for our seventh annual festival. The acoustic music community in the Ole Cowtown is still abuzz about the quality of the music during our two days together. There was one special letter to the editor that praised your group specifically and several parties have mentioned your stage presence and repertoire. Special thanks to Paul for putting together the "fiddlers five" that provided one of the magic moments of the fest. When we put everything together for our post-festival debriefing, we found that our attendance, gate and raffle proceeds were our best ever. Again thanks to y'all for being a big part of it. Hope we can impose on you again next year to make the annual pilgrimage to the "Great Empty Eastern Third"! Keep in touch. Bob
Lewistown Bluegrass Festival Coordinator Jul 28 2004Jim - I would like to emphasize that those who attended the Big Spring Creek Bluegrass Rendezvous in Lewistown on July 24, 2004 are still praising the appearance of the LeftOver Biscuits. You left quite an impression on the folks in Lewistown. People are already asking if you will be back next year. There was one young lady, known locally for her vocal abilities, that became so enthused with your music that she inquired about the possibility of singing a number with you the next time you make an appearance in Lewistown. That is special. Thanks again for a memorable weekend. The memories will last a long time. The music was great and, as a bonus, the band members are all wonderful people and a privilege to know. Duane Ferdinand Rendezvous Coordinator and LeftOver Biscuits Fan
Montana Arts Council Mar 01 2004LeftOver Biscuits: A Second Helping Recorded 2003 at Cougar Canyon Studios in Woods Bay, Bigfork, MT Engineered by Lars Pointer, mixed by Jim Sticka. Bigfork’s popular bluegrass quintet has impressed many with its blend of old-time instrumentation and contemporary string band sounds. Now LeftOver Biscuits is sharing their music with a much wider audience through "A Second Helping". Band founder, banjo player and vocalist Rudy Urban, has shepherded the group as it has evolved over the past seven-plus years. He is joined by Jim Sticka on guitar and vocals; Chad Fadely on mandolin, bouzouki and vocals; Paul Sebesta on fiddle; and Doyle Wells on bass. Guest appearances include Andrea Urban (Rudy’s daughter), who lends a lovely touch on lead and harmony vocals; Stephen Sticka (Jim's son) on bass harmony vocal; and Ernie Martinez on Dobro. The 14 tunes feature numerous old-time classics such as “Roseville Fair,” “Grandpa Get Your Guitar,” “I Hope You Dance,” “Red Haired Boy,” and “Battle of New Orleans.” While the songs frequently flow toward the melodic end of the spectrum, there is no shortage of fast and furious foot-stomping licks scattered throughout. Bluegrass fans will enjoy the way melodies and tight vocal harmonies balance the high-speed complexities of fiddle, mandolin and banjo. The band has performed frequently in Bigfork and elsewhere in the Flathead Valley and Pacific Northwest, as well as appearing as a featured band at the popular Bitterroot Bluegrass Festival held annually in Hamilton.

Fans at the Libby concert Aug 28 2003Hi there, so enjoyed the Concert Thursday night and was in Rosauers yesterday and there was some people in there talking about how much they had enjoyed it - thought I would just pass that news on. Take care - Love to all, Jim and Eileen
Andrea and Rich Gantner Jul 27 2003Dear Left Over Biscuits - Wow! Thank you so much for your incredible performance at our wedding ceremony and reception. The music you played for the ceremony did so much to enhance the meaningful yet fun atmosphere we had hoped to create. And the reception - well you guys were just awesome. You really read the crowd and played tunes that would get them on the dance floor. We especially loved "Let's Talk Hawaiian." I can't tell you how many glowing comments I got from my friends and family. You guys did all the work and I looked brilliant for hiring you. Yeah for me! It really would not have been the same special, memorable evening without your good humor and most excellent sounds. Thanks for traveling all the way up to Glacier to share your talent and make such an important contribution to our most special day! Best of luck in your future musical endeavors. Rich and I both hope we will have the chance to see you perform again! Andrea and Richard Gantner
The Missoulian Jun 24 2003Biscuits best when fresh- Erica Parfit for the Missoulian. RECORDING: "A Second Helping" ARTIST: LeftOver Biscuits The unassuming title of the band and album first attracted me to the recently released "A Second Helping" by Montana band LeftOver Biscuits. A nice picture of the band adorns the cover, and the group looks like a solid country/bluegrass band. For the most part, that is what they are. The album contains quite a few covers, interspersed with some instrumentals and a few vocal originals. Instrumentally, LeftOver Biscuits is very talented: These pieces are the strongest, having all the qualities of the kind of foot-stompin', heel-kickin' sound that brings a smile to bluegrass enthusiasts' faces. Some of the vocal tunes also offer that same musical quality. The album begins with a "I Hope You Dance," a lovely song done prettily... The vocalist's voice is very nice, with a clear, cool croon... All in all, "A Second Helping" is enjoyable - especially "Red Haired Boy," "Long Hard Ride" and "Hot Corn, Cold Corn." Each of these tunes shows off the talents of the band; these are fun-lovin' certified bluegrass tunes where LeftOver Biscuits shows its stuff. The album is worth a listen. "A Second Helping" is available at Rockin Rudy's and Budget Tapes and CDs

Montana Rockies Bluegrass Association Jun 14 2003By Brian Hall-"A Second Helping -- LeftOver Biscuits (Cougar Canyon Studios). Congratulations to western Montana's own LeftOver Biscuits on their new release. Herein lies over 50 minutes (14 cuts) of some ambitious contemporary acoustic music and bluegrass. Listen to banjoist Rudy Urban's daughter Andrea singing "I Hope You Dance" and "When You Say Nothing At All," and you'll hear what I mean about 'ambitious'. There are three perfectly lovely numbers featuring Andrea's beautiful voice and these are certainly among the high points of this project. Particularly, and perhaps my favorite cut of all, is Bill Staines' classic "Roseville Fair," which seems so well-suited to Andrea's voice and also highlights an important theme, I think, throughout this cd: a longing for the good ol' days. This reviewer is also fond of Jim Sticka's vocal work on three more good songs that milk this theme -- "Grandpa Get Your Guitar," "Kodak 1955,"and "Sutter's Mill"-- where Chad Fadely's fine mandolin touch runs seamlessly along Paul Sebesta's singing fiddle. Jim also croons through another western favorite from the Front Range Band, "Where the Wild River Rolls," and here too the listener can really hear the original flavor that Chad and Paul lay on the band. It's just great. These are all very nice, well-chosen songs that we don't hear too much and that to me is yet another strength in this project -- nice n' easy synching grooves that are appropriate for Doyle Wells' electric bass and the band's tight vocal harmony arrangements. Chad's mandolin and Eric Martinez's itinerant dobro work are really stellar throughout the recording. There are two instrumentals on this cd too, and before one groans to see "Red-Haired Boy" listed, notice that Chad picks up the bouzouki on this rendition and makes the tune sound wonderfully fresh. Enjoy!!!
Brenda Hanson of the "Fletcher Girls"May 10 2003Hey Biscuit Boys, You should be proud of "A Second Helping"...it really sounds great! Keep up the good work...It was a treat for me to hear Andrea as well, what a nice voice! I'll be listening to this collection again~~it's just like sitting around with you and having a good time.. See you soon, I just wanted to say "Good Job"!! Brenda
The Weekly Press Apr 29 2003The Habitat for Humanity fund raiser was a great success in Bigfork, thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible this year. And thanks to all the musiscians who gererously gave their time and talents to this worthy cause. A special note on LeftOver Biscuits who played at the Garden Bar for a two hour stint. Their music, energy, and good humor gave the audience as much amusement as listening enjoyment. Keep an eye on these "Local Boys", as they are fun to watch. We also find that the "Biscuits" have just released their new cd "A Second Helping". From what we heard at the Garden Bar, this cd should be fun to listen to. At a later date we hope to do a review on their newest project.
